Private Pilot License (PPL): the path
The PPL is the first pilot certificate: it lets you fly for personal purposes and carry passengers. Our partner school JJC Aviation trains under FAA Part 61 at Brackett Field (KPOC), La Verne, CA.
FAA Part 61 minimums (public rules)
- At least 40 hours of flight training minimum under Part 61 (most students need more; JJC's website reports its students average about 60 hours).
- Pass the FAA knowledge (written) test and the practical test (checkride) with an examiner.
- Hold an FAA medical certificate (or qualify under BasicMed rules).
- Be at least 17 years old for the certificate and able to read, speak, write and understand English.
The typical sequence
- Discovery flight — one introductory flight to feel it first (JJC lists it at $450).
- Ground + dual instruction — fly with an instructor while studying theory.
- First solo — your first flight alone, a milestone every pilot remembers.
- Cross-country & checkride prep — longer navigation flights, then polish for the practical test.
- Checkride — pass it and you are a private pilot.
What decides your timeline
Flying 2–3 times a week progresses far faster than once a month, because skills fade between lessons. Weather, aircraft availability and your study pace matter too. Any school promising a guaranteed finish date is guessing — ask for averages and ranges instead.
